For a long time one had to deal with the old ship lifts on this canal. After 30 years of planning and construction the most modern ship lift of Europe, Strépy-Tieu was finally completed and allows now a direct link from Charleroi and Brussels to the French class IV canal system. The short canal has not at all lost of attraction for tourism.



Neuer Schiffsaufzug Strépy-Thieu
The electro-mechanical ship lift of Strépy-Tieu
is the biggest and newest ship lift of the Inland Waterways of Europe. It replaces the four hydraulic lifts in its neighborhood and was open to navigation in 2002. It’s one of the most interesting attractions for tourism in the region.
