The Bohemian
river can be seen by skippers by three different ways: From Elbe/Labe to Prague it is a big river
making no problems to leisure boaters and the city of Prague offers all
amenities. Above Prague, the river is
still navigable for about 40 km. Skippers can go as far as to Vrané and
commercial traffic to the weir of Trebnice. Further up, where Moldova is really
charming, it’s navigable for canoeists or with rubber boats only.
This
waterway, connecting the capital of the Czech Republic with the metropolitan
area of Berlin and the Baltic
Sea could be of great importance. But traffic has gone back for quite some time now.
Ship convoys have great problems, especially between the confluence of Elbe with Moldau and Magdeburg, because of the
unstable flow conditions. The Czech side would like to solve this problem with a
dam just before the border to Germany, but German as well as Czech environment
protectors are against this project.
