The Baïse is a small, attractive affluent of River Garonne. It springs in the Pyrenees, south of Lannemezan on nearly 2000 meters over sea level and very near the border of Spain. It is navigable from Valence sur Baïse to its mouth into the Garonne and from here, one gets after a few km onto River Lot. From Buzet sur Baïse one reaches after two locks the Canal lateral à la Garonne where one can either take direction to Bordeaux or the Canal du Midi. It can happen that this river is closed over a short period because of high waters but this is rather seldom during high season.
Information to the River
Advantages: Beautiful landscapes, very good food, entry to Garonne and Lot, no commercial traffic.
Disadvantage: A bit isolated.
An ideal river for a houseboat holiday for families
Softly swinging hillsides pass through this landscape from the north to the south, ending at the foot of the Pyrenees. The main part of it is agriculturally used and therefore towns like Nerac, Condom and Lavardac have rural characteristics. You will find in this region a lot of beautiful places, natural parks, lakes and walking paths. It is also well known for its Antiquity shops. If you like to meet one of the rare bears of the Pyrenees, you have to leave your boat for some time at the end of the navigable part and follow the river by foot into the mountains….
