Canal de Briare
Coming from the Canal du Loing one passes shortly before the town of Montargis the entry of the Canal d’Orlean then the canal bridge and finds oneself abrupt on the Canal de Briare. Cargo ships are seldom but if you meet one in the narrow and curvy bit just at the entry at Montargis, relax, change into back gear and try again later. The landing place is just above the deep lock (4.80 m) next to a senior’s residence. Chatillon-Cologny has a nice landing place too. Soon afterwards you come to Rogny, les 7 Ecluses, where you should make a stop and see the splendid old staircase of locks. The next rest might be at Briare, already at the end of the canal.

Montargis offers very good shopping facilities. The town is rather small and very clean. One should absolutely see the 7 locks of Rogny. After a lot of problems they were finished in 1638 and used for more than 200 years. Just imagine, in these days about 10 ships passed this staircase daily. At the end of the canal the charming town of Briare with its famous canal bridge, built by Alfred Eiffel, is a must.
