Saar River | Germany
This former coal canal goes from the Canal de la Marne au Rhin at Condrexange northwards and flows into the Sarre (Saar) at Sarreguemines (Saargmünd). This river forms then the border to France for some kilometers before turning to the northwest, towards the Mosel. With this connection, it only just became navigable again all through, a pleasurable round trip is possible, the so called “Sauerkrauttour”.
This tour passes through Alsace and Lorraine (Elsass and Lothringen), thus regions, with a very changeful history, being “recaptured” by France and Germany for several times.
Coming from the Canal de la Marne au Rhin, one first of all passes through the beautiful area of the Etang de Gondrexange and Etang du Stock, both are not very deep. Then follows the chain of locks, down to Mittersheim, also on this stretch is one of these flat lakes, the Etang de Mittersheim, Mittersheim itself has a port with all amenities and shopping possibilities in the centre. At lock 13 is a very good, but not really cheap restaurant.
For the next few kilometers, one is surrounded by the forest of Fénétrange and accompanied by the Naubach (a brook). Short after the port of Bissert at Harskirchen (probably the most beautiful tie up of the canal), one gets into the valley of the Saar and therewith into open areas. The only Restaurant of this region is at the end of Harskirchen. The next place is the charming little town of Sarralbe, unfortunately its supermarket is far outside, on the N 61, and the possibilities to tie up are rather limited.
The next bit to Wittring is grown together and requires much attention. After lock 22 is the next tie up with restaurant, right in the big bend. It offers regional food and is good value for money. Now, there only rest 5 km to Sarreguemines (Saargmünd) before the picturesque Saar with its beautiful vine yards and the proper inns to them.

Food served here is rather solid but varied, comparable to the dishes of neighboring Saarland. In supermarkets one probably finds the most extraordinary choice of sausages which France can offer. Not to forget about the world famous “Quiche Lorraine” and everything that can be made of Mirabelle’s, from pies to spirits. The vines of Mosel, Saar and Maas can be recommended.
