Following up the Canal lat. de l’Aisne this part of the connection Oise – Meuse (Maas) leads through the Ardennes Argons to Pont à Bar on the Maas. The canal is cut in two. The first part is the prolongation of the lateral canal of the Aisne and finishes in an impasse at Vouziers. But the second part leads from Semuy into the Meuse.
Advantages: Shortest way from the Maas (Meuse) into the basin of Paris, very beautiful surroundings.
Disadvantage: Limited offers for tourists.
Recommendable for families who like to stay in untouched landscapes
This lovely landscape offers a lot to people interested in birds and plants. On the other side, fortifications of the last 800 years are present all over this often afflicted region. In peaceful times the Ardennes Argons were the place for hunting and summer resorts. The XVIII and XIX century were the prime time for country houses, beautiful residences and castles.
Meals are simple and a bit rough with a lot of pork meat. Influence from the Champagne doesn’t reach that far. However, it is worth looking for these rather simple meals. They are usually much better than the French “overall cooking”. The northeast of France is also famous for its sausages. No wine is produced here but the beer is so much the better.
