Canal des Vosges or Canal de l’Est, branche sud
as it used to be called until shortly. It crosses the southern part of Alsace-Lorraine. From its former brother, Canal de l’Est, branche Nord which is now called Canal de la Meuse, one navigates for a short stretch on the Mosel, until it goes into the Canal des Vosges at the Embranchement de Nancy.
The canal starts with the nice wharf of Richardmenil, continues through the wide valley of the Mosel southwards and crosses this one at km 34 on a newly constructed aqueduct. The not very charming town Charmes offers a large wharf, shops and a Restaurant. After Thaon les Vosges, at km 83 one has the choice to continue through the Golbey staircase of 15 locks or make a detour to Epinal. If water level on the branch canal allows it, a stay for the night at the nice port of Epinal is recommended. It offers all amenities and a good Restaurant.

Having reached the top (bièfe de partage), we continue down the valley of the Coney until the small river and the canal flow into the Petite Saône at Corre. Doing so, we cross a wild romantic landscape full of contrasts. Hardly passed an old industrial village, we feel like being on a wide alp. The further we get to the south, the tighter gets the valley.

With the flight of stairs of Golbey (last supermarket until Corre) one reaches the top and therewith the village of Chaumousey. Gourmets should plan a stop here and visit the “Calmosien”, the last really good address until Port sur Saône!

Further down the valley to Corre, the astonishing surroundings let us forget about missing Restaurants. Always accompanied by River Coney the valley gets more and more tight, first with small grasslands with cattle but soon there is no space for them. A stop at Fontenoy le Chateau is recommended. The port offers any comfort, the village a possibility for the most necessary shopping and the Pub at the port fair local food, when open….

Your boating holiday from River Mosel across the Vosges to the Haute Saône

Advantage: A very interesting waterway full of changes.

Disadvantage: Poor landside infrastructure from the top of the staircase (bièfe de partage) down to Corre.
