Canal du Rhône au Rhin, Branche Nord
Unfortunately this is a cut off canal. When the big motorway crossing of Mulhouse was built, there was a small barrier. Exactly at this place, run the Canal du Rhône au Rhin which used to go from St. Symphorien at the Saone to Strasbourg. Shortly before, the Grand Canal d’Alsace was opened and therefore one didn’t hesitate for long and the “useless” canal was filled up. This means that know everyone wanting to go from Basle to Strasbourg has got to go over River Rhine, an uncomfortable thing.
At the moment, the Branche Nord is navigable from Strasbourg to Friesenheim but it is supposed to reopen at least to the Embranchement de Colmar. With this, it would be possible to get from Strasbourg to Colmar directly. But, the reestablishing works drag on. The so highly glorified project didn’t survive the last change in Government at Paris and it is therefore uncertain whether the canal is going to be navigable one day again…
