Today, this very charming canal, the lock houses are lovingly decorated with flowers, is used for tourism only. It stands a bit in the shadow of Canal de Nantes à Brest and would deserve more attention.

Ille et Rance, Brittany, description
The beginning of this link from St. Malo at the Channel to the city of Rennes was a political one. It became necessary to by-pass the British Sea blockade and have access for Rennes to the Sea. Building the canal also gave the poor farmers of the area an additional income. In 1804, during the reign of Napoleon I, works started. In 1814, after the defeat of Napoleon in Russia, they ceased because of the lack of money. Only in 1922, the project continued with a private company and was finally inaugurated in 1832.

Your houseboat holiday in Brittany
Offers lovely surroundings, it’s close to the Sea and still an insider’s tip!

Brittany still has an un spoilt nature with many castles, churches and mills and it is off the beaten track. The extended ship pastures, the huge vegetable fields, flower cultures and the apple tree plantings are recovery for eye and sole!
If you avoid institutions like Disney Park and similar, you’ll always feel like coming back. Bretons, these not so real French, will welcome you with their discreet heartiness…
Important towns/villages;
St. Malo: Standing at the mouth of the Ille into the Channel, old fisherman port and fortified town.
Dinan: One of the most beautiful towns of Brittany, the medieval fortress dominates this exceptional place above the Rance valley. The city wall is entirely remaining and it surprises therefore with its unique heritage preserved over the centuries; belfry, church and friary, typical old houses, narrow alleys open up for you and let you discover their secrets.
Rennes: Capital of Brittany and university town.
Redon: Stands at the crossing of Ille et Rance and Nates à Brest.

Places of interest: Descending the river, the discovery of Dinard and St- Malo are real culminations.
Kitchen: A real pleasure! Everything between meat, birds, fish and sea fruit accompanied with fresh vegetable of the region.
Cellar: Filled with cider, bier and calvados! Good vines can be found but not of the region.
