This River has been canalized long time ago and it therefore has a very natural appearance again. It gets navigable at the capital of Artois, Arras. The waterway is parted in three stretches, the middle part, going through the town of Douai, is not navigable anymore, one has to change onto the waterway for big vessels, at the lock of Fort de Scarpe until Mortagne, one can get back and enjoy the river again. At Montagne du Nord one has to go onto the Schelde (Escault) again and cosiness has an end.
Advantage: For far stretches a comfortable waterway.
Disadvantage: One can’t avoid the waterway for big vessels.
The river itself is already worth a trip and it is the best connection between Belgium and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais as well as the Picardy. The town of Arras is worth to be seen and Douai has a nice old center. If you like wide, hilly and open landscapes, you will feel fine here!
