River Danube in Bavaria and the battle about the „real „source of it
One thing they have in common, the three favorites. They are all in Bavaria. Logically, the Danube would begin with the two headwaters Brigach and Breg, which are together already quite a river with 100’000 liters per second, which then absorb the brook Danube. The whole discussion has a lot to do with sensitivity of Donaueschingen, St. Georgien and Furtwangen. Being Swiss all the discussions are idle anyway; the Inn, flowing into the Danube at Passau, brings a lot more water then the Danube itself. And the source of the Inn is in Unterengadin, in Switzerland. But this can’t be. Otherwise the Rhine would be called Aare, the Po, Ticino and the Rhone, Roten and nearly all of them would have their beginning in the mountains of Gotthard. But let’s not go any further…. .

Sure is;
the official measuring starts at the confluence of Brigach and Breg and after this it’s called Danube. 

As we all know, the middle European Rivers were all transport ways for the Romans already. From these times derive the first plans to connect Danube, Rhine and Rhone. It took another 700 years until Karl der Grosse started to realize this idea. He gave order for a canal between Rezat, a feeder of the Main and the Altmühl a tributary of Danube, the Karlsgraben (see Main-Donau-Kanal).

Because of its strong current towing the Danube upstream was impossible. Therefore the people of Ulm created a new boat; the Ulmer Schachteln (boxes). They were 20-30 m long and 5-7 m wide and could take up to 100 tons. With them, one was able to transport goods to Vienna and the Black Sea. Once arrived, the “boxes” were sold for the value of the wood.
The Danube is now officially navigable from the confluence of Altmühl and the Main-Donau-Kanal at Kehlheim. It leaves Germany behind after 200 km at Obernzell.
