This canal system
on the left of River Emse with its canals Haren-Rütenbrock, Coevorden-Piccardie-Kanal and Ems-Vechte-Kanal (with its continuation over the Nordhorn-Almelo-Kanal) allowed a connection to the provinces of Drenthe and Overijssel until the middle of the 20th century.
In addition to this came on the German side the Süd-Nord-Kanal and on the Dutch side the Stieltjes-Kanaal.
The entire net was built between 1870 and 1904.
Today is, on the German side, only Haren-Rütenbrock-Kanal navigable all through.

As from the 1st of May 2009 the Ems-Vechte Kanal, the Nordhorner canals and the Nordhorn-Almelo-Kanal (to the border lock) are open again. Find further information to this on the site of the Niedersächsische Wasserwirtschaft.Homepage der Niedersächsischen Wasserwirtschaft.

Haren-Rütenbrock-Kanal
in the north of this canal net seems to be of no importance with its length of 13.5 km only. But it is the very important link on German grounds between Dortmund-Ems-Kanal and the Dutch Ter-Apel- and Stadskanaal to Groningen. After being closed for some month it’s know open in new glance.

The canal has 4 locks and a max. depth of 1.30 m, headroom is 4.50 m. 


Ems-Vechte-Kanal
The canal is the most southern connection to the Dutch canals of the provinces of Drenthe and Overijssel in the canal net left of the Ems.
Since this stretch is over 18 km very straight through woodlands, it must be very relaxing in high summer. In the town of Nordhorn exists a link canal with lock as an access to Almelo-Nordhorn-Kanal, unfortunately this one is not open to navigation anymore. 



Süd-Nord-Kanal
In the county of Bentheim and Emsland used to go from Haren-Rütenbrock-Kanal in the North to Nordhorn, were it had access to the Vechte, the Ems-Vechte-Kanal and the Almelo-Nordhorn-Kanal. Over the Echte-Kanal it had access to the “VErlengte Hoogenveensche Vaart” at Klazienaveen and over the Coevorden-Piccardie-Kanal to the Stieltjeskanaal at Coevorden.

Echte-Kanal
is the shortest connection to the Dutch canal system in the old canal net left of Ems. It goes from Süd-Nord-Kanal for a short stretch over the border to Klazienaveen at the Stieltjeskanaal, which continues to the Verlengte Hoogeveensche Vaart and to the south to Almelo. 

Coevorden-Piccardie-Kanal
is a further German – Dutch waterway, it connects the Süd-Nordkanal at Georgsdorf with the town of Coevorden at the Stieltjes-Kanaal. The canal has a length of 26.5 km and 4 locks. The only port used to be at the starch factory of Emlichheim.
The canal is open for smaller boats again from Nordhorn to the German-Dutch border. 


Hoofdkanaal
goes on the Dutch side parallel to Süd-Nord-Kanal from Rütenbrock over Emmer-Compascuum to the Echte-Kanal east of Klazienaveen. Unfortunately also this canal is used for dehydration only today.
