License
It becomes necessary if sailing or motor boats have an engine performance of more than 5 PS (3.68 KW). There is no license asked for lower performances.
Sportbootführerschein Binnen
This license is necessary for all boats on inland waterways with an engine performance of more than 5 PS (3.68 kW). One can navigate boats with a max. length of 15 meters on all the Inland Waters of Germany.
Special regulation for the Lake of Constance
On this lake especially tightened regulations are applied. A special license, the Bodenseeschifferpatent, is officially demanded for boats with more than 6 PS (4,4 kW) engine performance or if sailing boats have a sail surface of more than 12 square meters.
Charter license for house boats
If you hire a houseboat, the hirer can, after a briefing of 3 hours, issue a special holiday charter license for the duration of your holiday. This charter license is valuable for boats of a max. length of 15 meters, with a max. speed of 12 km/h. There may not be more than 12 people on board.
