der and Hebble Navigation
Was one of the first navigable waterways in the Pennines and made a connection to Aire and Calder Navigation. In 1770 the waterway was finished with a side branch to Dewsbury. In 1828 another branch to Halifax was opened but unfortunately closed down again in 1942. Calder and Hebble Navigation had its best times in the last century, not as most of the others, since transports to the coal-fired power station of Tornhill brought the most important volume of traffic in 1955. Supplies to the power station continued until 1981! Today it is, with its changeable course through pure nature and old industry, one of the most popular stretches in England.
