Der Lago Maggiore in Italien

Lakes of Italy: Lago Maggiore
A lot of people think of this lake to be Swiss. This might be because of the very famous adjacent Swiss towns like Locarno and Ascona. In reality, only about 20% of the lake is Swiss territory, the entire rest lies in Italy.
These 80% are sufficient to make it second in size of the Italian lakes after the Lago di Garda, with well known places like Stresa, Arona, Luino etc. It has a surface of 212.5 km2 and has a considerable depth of 372 m, meaning that the ground of the lake lies up to 170 m below Sea level.
