It is only conditionally a river today since, after the many embankments and redirections of waterways in this part of Zuid-Holland and Zeeland, it is feed by canals only. But still, it could mostly preserve its river character until Gouda. As from there to Nieuwe Maas just short before Rotterdam, it is a main waterway.
