Kanaal Almelo - De Haandrik / Stieltjeskanaal / Zijlkanaal nar Almelo | Overijssel, Linge / Gelderland | Netherlands

Hoogeveensche Vaart
It is developed for professional vessels until Hoogeveen. On the
Verlengde Hoogeveeensche vaart things become a bit more comfortable since it is at Klazienaveen, respective at Emmen, a dead end. But, there is a possibility to get into the southern IJssel by taking at Veenord the Stieltjes Kanaal and Kanaal Almelo-De Haandrik.

Still in the first half of the last century, the Verlengde Hoogeveensche Vaart crossed the German border and flew into the Nord-Süd-Kanal. This continued over Coevorden-Picardie-Kanal, closed today as well, to Haren Rütenbrock-Kanal, giving access to the Ems.
At that time, one could get onto the Hooftkanaal, short before the border which went parallel to Nord-Süd-Kanal to the Ter-Apel-Kanal. This led towards northwest over the Stadskanaal to Groningen and westward to Haren-Rütenbrock-Kanal too.
