Ijsselmeer & Markermeer
Ijsselmeer came into existence when the dike of 29 km between De Oever and Makkum was completed in 1932. Therewith, the former Zuidersee was cut off the sea and the omission of tides allowed putting dry large areas like Noordoostpolder and Flevoland.
Later, a second dike in the middle of former Zuidersee, between Enkhuizen and Lelystad, made the border to Markermeer.
