Noord Willemskanaal
goes from Groningen to the south and the town of Assen. It is a class II waterway (Kempenaar) and still used by freight vessels.

At Assen it goes into the Drentse Hoofdvart classified 0 for leisure boaters only. The canal flows into Mepplerdiep at Meppel and is a favorite north-south link for skippers.
Between Assen and Hoogersmilde, Opsterlandse Compagnonsvaart gives access to Prinses Margriet Canaal in the west.
