Turf Route
It starts at Nes by Akkrum, northeast of Sneeker meer as Borne, as from Aldeboarn it’s called Nieuwe Diep and becomes the Nieuwe Vaart when it meets the Stroomkanaal and finally flows into the canal giving its name to it all, see the title…

These waterways occurred between 1630 and 1830 in connection with the dismounting of turf in this area. It was given up in the mid of the last century and should have been filled up in 1974. Pater vun Ulden at Gorredijk organized opposition to these plans and in consequence a trust was launched in order to preserve this Vaart. Today, navigation across these very beautiful moorlands is a great experience and a favorite to leisure skippers.
