This modern waterway is navigable for big vessels between Groningen and Lemmer since 1951 only. The fairway was deepened to 3.80 m in 1965. This allows smaller sea vessels to pass as well. Heavy commercial traffic does however not disturb too much. The canal is generously developed and crosses many “mere” on its way (Bergumer Meer, Wijde Ed, Pimeer, Sneeker Meer, Koevorder Meer, Grote Brekken).

The waterway flows at Lemmer into Lemsterhoek and therewith into the IJsselmeer. Don’t miss to see the water scoop of Wouda. This big steam driven bucket elevator pump of 1920 is in its original condition and manages 4000 cubic meter a minute!
