River Reitdiep
used to connect Groningen with Lauwerzee but this got embanked and now inland waterway navigation end now at the dike and sea lock of Zoutkamp. It is navigable from Noorderhafen at Groningen, whereas the first stretch is actually the canalized Drentsche Aa. Until construction of Ems-Kanaal in 1876, the river was the only navigable link to the sea and therefore of great importance. In 1877 dike and sea lock of Zoutkamp were built giving the town of Groningen with its many waterways the advantage not to be depending on tides anymore.

There are hardly any commercial vessels on the river today and it is a favorite area for leisure boaters. Since head room is free up to 30 m, very beautiful old sea and inland sailing boats can be seen on this stretch.
