At Gerkesklooster, the border to Friesland, Prinses Margrietkanaal changes its name and becomes Van Starkenborghkanaal which is continuing to the Oostersluis at Groningen. From there, it has access to Eemskanaal and Winschoterdiep. The canal was finished in 1938.

Aduarderdiep

Aduaderdiep starts in the north, at Reitdiep by Aduarderjijl, crosses then Van Starkenborgh Kanaal and flows into Hoendiep southwest of Groningen.

Hoendiep

The main waterway turns off Van Starkenborgh west of Groningen at Zuidhorn and makes the southern by-pass of the city of Groningen. Southeast of the town, it meets Van Starkenborgh again and has access to Eemskanaal and Winschoterdiep.
