River Sura
is, according to unofficial information navigable downstream for 400 km. This might be correct for leisure boating but probably not for commercial vessels. There are no ports or dock-yards and the strongly meandering river has many sandbanks.
The last bigger town upstream is Penza and there is also the dam of the retained River Sura. The town of Penza lies 700 km south of Moskow and has half a million habitants. Leisure boating on the barrier lake is therefore very popular. There is no lock to pass the dam and access downstream is therefore not given. Last place before the mouth into River Oka is the town of Ydrin.
