River Desna
The River with a length of 1130 km has its spring in Russia, near the heights of Smolensk. It crossed the border to Ukraine about 40 km above the town of Novhorod-Siver'kyi. According to official information, the river as navigable from there. The river is partially very wide with many sandbanks. A depth-sounder and great care while navigating, are recommended. The skipper is en route on the strongly meandering river for 535 km before reaching the capital of Kiev. The linear distance is not even half as much.  


The very attractive town of Novgorod doesn't offer any built wharfs and one is, down to Chernigov (Tschernihiw) dependent on native possibilities along the banks. Provisions can become difficult without careful planning. But, the town of Chernigov with about 300 thousand has a small port and all shopping facilities. As a consequence to the catastrophe of Chernobyl, the number of habitants has diminished the last few years.
